The Writers’ Federation of New Brunswick (WFNB) Annual General Meeting will be held April 7-9 in Fredericton. Both professional and amateur writers as well as literary enthusiasts, whether members of the organisation or not, are invited to attend a weekend filled with workshops, readings and lots of creative fun.

The weekend kicks off Friday April 7th with readings by WFNB members who have had books published in the past year. Join the authors for drinks and dinner from 6pm with the readings beginning at 7pm in the Sienna Room at BrewBakers, 546 King Street.

Two writing workshops will be held Saturday April 8th at the Fredericton Public Library, 12 Carlton Street.

Award-winning poet, Kathy Mac, will begin the sessions at 10am. Kathy’s two-hour poetry workshop is called “Figurative Language in the Poem, Poet, Poetry.”

“Your writing matters; your language works, and plays, at making meaning. During this workshop, it will mostly play,” Mac says.

Participants are asked to please bring to the workshop a favourite poem written by someone else. “And—if you have one—one of your own poems which you wouldn't mind discussing in the group,” Mac adds. “Don't worry if you don't have one; it's not integral to what we're going to do.”

At 3:15pm best-selling author, Beth Powning, will give a workshop called “Remembered Places, People, and Times – Using Memory to Create Literary Non-Fiction.”

Known for her powerful lyrical style and rich details in her prose, Powning’s workshop on transforming personal experience into literary non-fiction promises to offer something for everyone, whether they're just starting to think about getting into writing or they've already been published.

Saturday evening’s festivities begin at 6:30pm with the annual WFNB Awards Banquet at the Palate Restaurant and Café, 462 Queen Street. Join honoured guest, M. Travis Lane, as the winners of the WFNB Literary Competition receive their awards and entertain with a reading from their winning entries.

The weekend wraps up with an Open Mic reading Sunday April 9th beginning at 10am in the Ice House on the UNB Campus. This event always delivers a mixture of home-grown talent, with everything from traditional and modern poetry to fiction, personal essays and more. Everyone is invited whether you would like to read or just listen.

WFNB members receive discounted prices but all events are open to the public and you don’t have to be a member to attend. Registering early before March 15th also garners a discount. The cost is:

Early Registration $40 (members) $50 (non-members)
Late Registration (after March 15th) $50 (members) $60 (non-members)
Awards Banquet $40 per person

Annual membership in the WFNB costs $45 per family, $40 for individuals and $20 for high school students. Benefits include the NB ink quarterly newsletter, reduced workshop fees, networking with writers, and more.
